NESP (2013-2018) is an all-inclusive, sector-wide programme whose prime goal is: Quality Basic Education and training research for Kenya's Sustainable Development.

VISION: A globally competitive education, training, research and innovation system for sustainable development.

Machakos was selected ,in an article written by  Chege Muigai in the Daily Nation, as one of the top counties with the best chances of becoming an economic giant.

For some of the reasons that have helped Kiambu prosper in the past, Machakos County, Nairobi’s eastern neighbour, is home to important industrial and residential centres like Athi River and Mlolongo.

Sadly, the developments do not extend to most parts of the huge county, but that is about to change when a planned technology city development is finalised.

Down the road from the junction town of Makutano ya Chumvi will be what is being billed as the continent’s first techie city. Built to the book, it will become the world’s third IT magnet after Silicon Valley in California, USA, and Bangalore in eastern India.

Already, the benefits are being felt around the site in Konza, where land prices have reached a record high. This is because the Kenyan government is seeking private sector participation in the construction of a multi-billion dollar ICT City Park known as Konza Technology City in Machakos County. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communication, Dr Bitange Ndemo said upon its completion the project is expected to be Africa’s home of computerisation –complete with a skyscraper business centre, hotels, international schools and hospitals.

Phase one of the project will be the construction of a science park, business process outsourcing centre, international finance centre, tourism facilities and a research centre. In phase two, it is anticipated that the development will create 39 000 jobs nationally, with half of those direct jobs to be found within Konza technology Park.

What all this will do in the end is create a modern economic centre with a cosmopolitan outlook whose impact on the country, Africa and the world is massive. Machakos will obviously become the biggest beneficiary as the home county.
